Conflict Resolution Summary

It's important to make sure that discussions about conflict are meaningful and do not escalate into further polarization. In most situations, it is vital to discuss the conflict openly with empathy and respect as was explored in the scenario activity. Addressing the situation as soon as immediate reactions have settled is often helpful. An open mind is essential when trying to see the point of view of everyone involved in a disagreement.

 

We have also explored five conflict resolution strategies that people use to handle conflict, including avoiding, defeating, compromising, accommodating, and collaborating.

Avoid This is when people just ignore or withdraw from the conflict. 

​

Compete - This is often used by people who go into a conflict planning to win. 

​

Accommodate -This strategy is when one party gives in to the wishes or demands of another.

​

Collaborate - This method is used when people are both assertive and cooperative. This results in a win-win resolution.

​

Compromise - With compromise everyone gives up a little bit of what they want, and no one gets everything they want.
